"Uncompromising" best describes Hartenberg's winemaking philosophy, from grape selection and meticulous attention to detail in the cellar, to sustainable agricultural practices as a member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative. Their dedication to quality and versatility is extremely admirable and yet this small estate sets the bar higher each year they receive yet another accolade. Hartenberg can trace its history back to 1692 and yet it is over the past 18 years, under the brilliant direction of chief winemaker Carl Schultz and the vision of the Mackenzie family that the winery has gone from strength to strength. The estate is recognised as one of South Africa's top 20 estates by 26 of the country's leading wine professionals in www.grape.co.za's 2010 poll and is one of the oldest and foremost producers of Shiraz spanning some 40 years. The winery is also known for outstanding Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, mainly thanks to the cooling influences of the Atlantic Ocean just 30 km away that ensures slow ripening for optimal maturity and flavour intensity.
