Starting an evening with a Merlot Martini is a very good indication that you are going to have fun! And last Wednesday was no exception.
Heleen from Hartenberg joined the Bancroft team and our clients for an intimate dinner at Christopher’s, Covent Garden.
The (Hartenberg) Merlot Martini and the Sauvignon Blanc 2009 were accompanied by some delicious canapés, as the guests arrived and took their seats. Heleen gave a short introduction to the domaine before we tucked into a wonderful starter of Ceviche of Salmon, served with avocado pearls & a Key-lime & chipotle dressing.
We were amazed by the food matching to this dish – the Weisser Riesling 2009 highlighted the citrus character of the dish whereas the Chardonnay 2008 (not normally what you would serve with ceviche!) was a sublime match with the oak almost disappearing and becoming at one with the dish. Superb.
For main we matched the famous Christopher’s blackened Rib-eye Steak, and pot of Boston Baked beans, with the Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz 2008 and the Shiraz 2007. The spiciness of the straight Shiraz stood up well to the Boston Baked beans.
We had decided to keep the best for last for the cheese course – The Stork 2007, Eleanor 2007 and then the Gravel Hill and Mackenzie to finish off.
