Every year Top Wine SA releases a list exhibiting the leading examples of South African wine. Consistently performing wines are brought before an international, panel of wine experts who taste and judge the wines blind.
2013's results (announced in January) should have producer Cederberg celebrating, with five of their wines heralded by the panel. Their acclaimed wines are:
Cederberg's Shiraz was further credited by The Wine Advocate in December 2012 with, the 2009 vintage receiving 91 Parker points. Neil Martin of The Wine Advocate called it a "very well crafted Shiraz" and remarked, "It is harmonious and refined with a svelte, caressing finish". He advises that the wine is drinking now, but can be kept up until 2017.
Martin also commended the Ghost Corner Sauvingon Blanc 2011, which recived 89 Parker points. This he exalted as "a fine Sauvignon Blanc", which again can be drunk now, or will last until 2015.
The Wine Advocate also recognised the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, which Top Wine SA had not recognised in their Top SA Cabernet Sauvignon catergory. Cederberg should be proud of their "precocious Cabernet with an opulent but nicely balanced, velvety finish". It can be enjoyed now until 2016.
With this fantastic collection of acclaimed wines, it comes as no surprise to hear that Cederberg are one of the 14 pioneering, South African producers who joined together to form Premium Independent Wineries Of South Africa (PIWOSA) last month. The new group which assembled with the backing of Wines of South Africa, Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association and Integrated Production of Wine, aims to raise the profile of premium South African wines, which tend to be grosly underrepresented in both the on- and off-trades internationally. Believing that their premium wines can rival those from Australia, France, New Zealand and California, PIWOSA will launch a series of international marketing campaigns. They'll target the UK and Scandanavia first, (the campaign in the UK will be June 3-6) and then subsequently address USA, Canada and Hong Kong.
