The French are here…..!

Bermondsey Street is fast becoming a foodie’s paradise. We moved offices to Bermondsey Street a few years ago and since then things on the restaurant front have been going from strength to strength, and my waist line has been going out like the tide. The choices are stunning and endless with Zucca, Pizzaro, Jose, Tanners to name a small selection. And now the French have joined us on Bermondsey Street!

This restaurant in question is called Casse Croute and is run by the charming Alex and Herve and their small team. This small but perfectly formed restaurant has just 25 covers but could not be more perfect if it tried. It is the quintessentially French Bistro you are always looking for in the UK and never quite find.

I went there last week with our MD Neil McAndrew for a quick lunch and a general catch up. We were both delighted in what we discovered. The wine list, which has a number of our wines on it I am very proud to say (Pierre Moncuit Champgane, Riesling Kientzeler, Aromas Sauvage to name but three), is short, well-priced and very French.

Let me give you an example. We had a quick glass of champagne to take the edge off on arrival and this was served in a glass I have not seen in about 20+ years. The glass is one of those old school flat shaped champagne glasses and as legends tells us this shape comes from the curvature of Marie Antoinette’s bosom. Anyway enough about the glass wear and onto the food. In short the food is exactly what you want: unfussy, beautifully cooked with bags of flavour and served with style and attention. I had the chilled melon soup, which on a hot day was perfect, and then the Guinea Fowl, with lentils, which was simply delicious.

If you are nearby at any point during the day I would highly recommend a visit. They serve food all day.

The Evening Standard has written a fantastic review of Casse-Croute which rates our very own Domaine de Viranel, Aromes Sauvages very highly. Read more.
