My trip to Calvados in the motor home, by Mike Unsworth

We recently returned from one of our regular adventures touring France. My wife Helen and I are fortunate enough to own a motor home which has solar panels enabling us to “wild camp” as we have no need for electric hook-ups.
A few years ago we joined an organisation called “French Passion” that enables us to choose natural sites and discover the best the French countryside has to offers. All over France, they have farmers, winemakers and various artisan setups, which welcome you to stay overnight- safe and peaceful stopovers in all the regions of France.
We have the joy of tasting and enjoying all the authentic local produce… olive oil, cheese, wine of course from all the wine-growing regions of France, organic fruit and vegetables, cured meats, honey, duck liver pâté. For us it is far better to spend some money on this to take home and enjoy than to spend the same amount of Euros on staying at a busy campsite.
From the picture above (though not great quality) you can see the sky was grey in July in France too! We have stayed at this place a few times. It is in the Calvados area and Pascal the owner makes fantastic cider and apple juice. He decided to branch out into spirits. Having no distillery didn’t seem to stop him – he hired a mobile version! Yes this articulated trailer has all the necessary “plumbing” to make your Calvados, I certainly have never seen one, and as I have an apple tree in my garden perhaps I should tow one of these contraptions over to the UK!!
