Hartenberg Estate is on top of the world after its highly acclaimed The Stork Shiraz 2008 clinched first place in the top 10 ranking of the 2012 Syrah du Monde competition in France.
Hartenberg The Stork was the best performer and one of three South African wines to make the top ten selection, which this year included 14 wines as some of the scores were described by the competition as “rigorously equal”.
Syrah du Monde, the only international wine competition dedicated solely to this varietal, held at Château d’Ampuis, rated 445 wines from 24 countries, awarding gold medals to just 30 wines.
With a track record spanning nearly 40 years, Hartenberg’s Shiraz regularly takes centre stage at local and international awards enjoying an unmatched reputation for high-end quality and above all, consistency. This achievement at Syrah du Monde follows on the international 3rd place achieved by The Stork 2005 in the same competition in 2008.
Carl Schultz, winemaker at Hartenberg |
“The Stork vineyard site imparts immediacy, ‘jump out of the glass’ flavours, richness and a broad palate to finish,” is how Carl Schultz, Hartenberg’s award winning winemaker of the past 19 years, describes the remarkable single vineyard which produces the grapes for this wine that teems with black fruit, violets and cherries.
Carl is fortunate to be able to age his flagship reds in the estate’s impressive underground maturation cellar for a minimum of four years, allowing them to reach their full potential prior to release. The Stork 2008 is only up for release in September 2012, but we will be offering it en primeur very soon.
The Stork Shiraz 2007 is available for purchase now on our website. This wine received a Silver Medal in this year’s Syrah du Monde competition and is drinking really well at the moment.
