Rugby/Wine Lovers loving tasting TRE wine with us at home!

It’s Rugby World Cup fever here and ahead of the French All Blacks game this weekend Roland has been busy entertaining wine lovers, mainly from France and England. They seem to like tasting the wine in our kitchen walking through the garden for more extensive tasting in the tiny winery. Last night four French guys from Paris and Bordeaux were blown away by the elegance and pure expression of fruit in all the wines.
They did order a fair bit of Coq d’Or Pinot Noir 2009, which has been made especially to welcome the French team here to Hawke’s Bay. It will help them get through the nerves as they build up to the quarter final match this weekend. They were also fascinated by the tank fermented Fat Snapper Chardonnay – could it be Vouvray they pondered in the blind tasting! Then the roundness and succulence of the Fat Trout Chardonnay stole their hearts while the Pheasant and Duck provided an ideal opportunity to see a more European aspect of Kiwi pinot noir with elegance and finesse combining with the richness of the new world fruit.

Roland seems to have captured the attention of the international media – with France TV5MONDE interviewing him in Napier when the French team were here....He has been guiding a number of tourists through the wineries, earlier this week it was a chopper flight dropping into the local wineries around us. Lucky for some! His OUTRAGEOUS French accent has meant he has been hosting a number of dignitaries including the Tahitian sports minister and head of the Tahitian RFU!

2010 Fat Duck is bottled with an updated label, complete with gold foiled logo and a touch of red, it has a new brighter, metallic red capsule. Deep complex, dark brooding fruits, nice acid backbone indicate aging potential – it’s a beauty!

It’s frost season now so the frost fans/windmills were going flat out last week as high pressure across NZ brought beautiful high temperatures of 22 in the day but dropping below zero at the TRE high altitude vineyard. Roland and father in law Bay are up most mornings from 3am monitoring temperatures. The steep hillside where the Fat Duck grows is only just coming into leaf so has been well protected from the early morning freeze. This week is better with cloud cover and a breeze.
