Ducru Beaucaillou vintage comparison, by Alex Robertson

A good friend and keen wine man invited me for dinner to taste a couple of vintages of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou last night and what a fine evening it was. I am very much looking forward to visiting the Chateau to taste the 2011 vintage in a few days time.

Ch. Ducru-Beaucaillou, St. Julien 2002
This was a delightful pairing to the roast lamb. Fragrant aromas of black cherries, ripe strawberries and cedar wood filled the glass.  The palate was gentle, quite earthy with cassis, black cherries and a bitter finish which ended quite quickly. And so did the bottle.

Ch. Ducru-Beaucaillou, St Julien 2001
The nose on the 2001 showed darker fruit, concentrated cassis, black cherries and tobacco.  This is well structured with great concentration of fruit, a layered complexity that reached the whole palate and firm tannins which melded beautifully with the juicy roasted Spring lamb. Delicious!
