My internship at Bancroft Wines, by Joris Geerdes

Hi, I’m Joris Geerdes, I’m 18 years old and I have been doing an internship at Bancroft Wines for 2 months. I come from Nice in the south of France and I wanted to share my experiences of the Bancroft team with you.

It has been a really nice experience! Why?

Firstly, the team is lovely! They often check on me, to talk about everything and nothing, and they are really funny! In France, it is really not the same. Employees don’t really talk to each other because French people don’t mix work with pleasure.  It is also why I am really happy to work in an office like this. Even the directors are close to the team. Also, they are all really interested in wine so I think they love their job! The location is also fantastic: only 10 minutes walk to London Bridge and you can walk 3 minutes to buy your food and eat at London More Place, with a beautiful view of Tower Bridge… Even if the weather is not always as good in London compared to Nice!

Secondly, I have really learnt a lot about business. I study International trade in a business school and this internship has helped me to put my learning into practice. Apart from my English that I have improved, I have been to the London Wine Fair where I talked to lots of people (producers, commercial agents, distributors) who all explained their work to me. I also observed the sales strategy, how to organise a fair, the prospecting, and the marketing strategy. I think the most important things in business are the product and the relationship between the customer and the salesperson. Bancroft Wines have some very good wines and know everything about them, and the people have excellent relationships with their customers.

I have been Claire Scott-Gall’s Marketing Assistant. She took me to meetings and to a conference at Australia House! I have discovered a lot of things during my internship. I have mainly worked on the website update, the organisation of the fair and prospecting. I have also learnt a lot about wine and now know about the different grapes varieties; I have also tasted a lot of wines and recognize the difference between the wines according to the country.

Thirdly, because I love London and the city! There is always something to do and the people are more open-minded here. There are so many beautiful places to visit…

In conclusion, I can say that this internship has been really educational in every way, both personally and professionally. I have tried to do my best at work even if it was difficult for me with the language. But it has been a really nice experience and I will never forget these 2 months in London and I want to say a big thank you to all the Bancroft Team!
