Bancroft's New Recruits: meet Kenny Stewart, Head of Private Clients

How long have you worked for Bancroft Wines?

Five months

How did you get into wine?

Trying foolishly to cut down on real ale, so as to lose a little weight and trying wine instead, which I thought would be abject rubbish, like all the stuff I had when I was student.  I was entranced and hooked. I’m no slimmer needless to say.

What are your main areas of expertise?

The classic French regions especially Burgundy, as well as Rhone and Bordeaux.

What's the most memorable moment in your career to date?

Too many and I do remember most of them! Professionally a Rousseau vertical tasting at Clive Coates with a great customer. Or tasting the 1999 Burgundies with a great customer at the IMW tasting – both defined the path I would take. So many socially: one recent one involved a terrific fellow Wolfgang at Otto’s restaurant drinking incredible wine from the 20th century.  And even more recently Chris Munro’s 50th birthday at Christies - a wonderful night and only right and proper for a wonderful man. I have been the lucky recipient of incredible generosity from customers involving wine, especially a dubious type known as RRR, and have loved every one of those moments.

Desert island disc and accompanying wine?

Mmm tough – so many in both fields.  It could be Celebrated Summer by Husker Du but too noisy for fine wine and idyllic settings.  So here goes - Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk. And Musigny by Freddie Mugnier.

What's your beverage of choice when you're not drinking wine?

Good coffee and fine foaming English ales.

What are your plans for this weekend?

Hopefully watching Gala Rugby Club dishing it out to the auld enemy Hawick en-course to winning the Scottish league for the first time in many a year!  And a film – something arty and European – the Great Beauty perhaps.
