Ataraxia appoints Bancroft Wines as exclusive UK importer

We're delighted to announce that Bancroft Wines has been appointed Ataraxia's new, exclusive UK importer.

As one of South Africa's premier Estates, cited as 'one to watch' by Tim Atkin in his most recent wine report on South Africa, this is great news for all at Bancroft and our customers, and will bolster our already strong South African suit in a harmonious manner. We are looking forward to working with such an esteemed producer.

Ataraxia winemaker and owner, Kevin Grant comments:

“After much homework as to who could best represent Ataraxia, Bancroft Wines easily ticked all the boxes. I am looking forward to a most fruitful partnership with Bancroft Wines to the benefit of our existing and new clients.”

Alex Harper, Account Manager at Bancroft comments:
“One of South Africa’s most talented winemakers had a cool climate dream. He made the dream come true and the dream did not disappoint. I’m delighted that Bancroft is now able to share in that vision and show off his trio of stunningly crafted wines. This is South African wine as you might not yet know it.

Ataraxia is a boutique South African winery founded in 2004. In partnership with a few friends husband and wife team Kevin and Hanli purchased 50 hectares of prime vineyard land. Ataraxia is situated in unique landscape, known as The Skyfields - lying as it does on the most elevated section of the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Nestled on this commanding rise beneath the soaring BabylonsToren mountain range, the vineyards are planted on some of the most spectacular terroir South Africa has to offer. It is a place where wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth are crafted- proudly holding their own in the international arena.
We will be taking on the following three award-winning-wines:

Ataraxia Chardonnay 2013

RRP £21.95-£22.95

As has become the norm in crafting Ataraxia Chardonnay, a minimalist, non-interventionist winemaking approach, geared to reflect sense of place and expression of terroir, was adopted. This wine is 100% barrel fermented and carefully matured in specially selected small French oak barriques sourced exclusively from Burgundian coopers. Fortnightly batonnage was employed throughout the 9 month maturation period. The result is a Chardonnay that is New World in provenance but Old World in stylistic leaning. A chiselled, focussed wine that effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense. The palate is penetrating and profound yet graceful and poised. A forceful mineral acidity is beautifully balanced by a subtle yet compelling intensity of fruit. A classic length, creaminess and intriguing complexity defines this stylish, world class Chardonnay.

Ataraxia Sauvignon Blanc 2014

RRP £13.95-£14.95

This wine favours individuality and minerality ahead of pure, pungent fruit, but still shows hints of passion fruit and citrus as well as green melon aromas. These are effortlessly reflected on the palate and are complemented by a lively acidity which underpins a classy structure and succulent texture. A wine of substantial poise, length and charm.

Ataraxia Serenity (red blend) 2009

RRP £17.95-£18.95

The Serenity 2009 is the product of one of the Cape’s finest vintages of the decade. A finely scented vibrant nose with beautifully lifted dark berry fruit and intriguing mineral and spicy notes characterise this wine. Refined, polished tannins are wrapped in an elegant structure that subtly occupies all corners of ones palate.  Ethereal, yet assertive; classic and lingering, it reflects the grasp of style and deft hand of its maker. PLATTER’S SOUTH AFRICAN WINE GUIDE 5*

A new Pinot Noir will be released in early 2015.

Current stockists of Ataraxia include Laytons/Jeroboams, Howard Ripley, Quaff (& into the Vindependents group), and Stone, Vine & Sun.

Kevin Grant will be visiting the UK following the Beautiful South tasting (from 15th-19th October).
