Autumn Cambridge College Tasting, by Sean Burbridge

All started well on Tuesday morning as Mike turned up at my house on time, ready to head to Cambridge for our biannual Cambridge College wine tasting event.

The tasting was held at a different venue to normal, Gonville and Cauis College, next door to King’s College and right in the heart of Cambridge city centre. The location was fantastic and walking through the college grounds to get to our room was a joy as always. Immaculately kept lawns, beautiful old architecture and trees lining the path leading into a little courtyard where our tasting room was situated.

The room was lacking a view and a little low on natural light but apart from that suited our needs perfectly. The wines were set out in the standard rectangular format going through from simple refreshing whites right through to aromatic new world examples and the reds from light “house wine” types through to full bodied Rhone and Argentine Malbecs. A quick fly-by tasting revealed all the wines were showing well so all we needed were the tasters......

The standard email invites were sent well in advance of the day and then these were followed up with a postal invite for those who still prefer the old fashioned methods of communication. With a record attendance, I have to assume the mail shot was well worth the time and effort with representatives from 12 different universities showing up to taste through the range.

A feedback form was used alongside the standard tasting sheet to ascertain their thoughts on improving future events and to get an idea of the styles of wines which were liked and disliked. This proved interesting reading. Often the wines that appeared in the “most liked” section for some people, also featured in the “most disappointing” for others. This just proves how subjective the world of wine is and also goes to show that you cannot please all of the people, all of the time!

All in all, it was a very successful event with great wines, a few new faces and a better understanding of the University's requirements.
